Setting:
This book takes place in England, in the early 1300’s. It is the first book in the “Crispin” trilogy, and starts the adventures of Asta’s son, a 13-year-old boy who is outcasted by his own society. This book is told in first person, and the genres are historical fiction and mystery.
Plot:
Asta’s son lived with his mother in small village in England. They are very poor, but they get along. Asta is the name of his mother, and no one knows the name of his father, so they refer to him as Asta’s son. When Asta’s son mother dies, he is taken in to live with the priest. But soon he is accused of a crime he did not commit. And the person accusing him off his crime is none other than his master, John Aycliffe. The priest tells Asta’s son to run away, and that he will meet him before he leaves. The priest also gives him two things, a cross of lead with words on it, and a name, Crispin. But when the priest dies unexpectedly, and John Aycliffe declares him a wolf’s head, Crispin finds himself on the run. ( Being called a wolf’s head means anyone can kill you.) But Crispin’s newfound freedom does not last long. Soon he is enslaved by a man named Bear. Bear is a juggler, but Crispin does not think that that is all there is to this man. However, Crispin starts to trust Bear, and he is soon apprenticed to him. Soon the duo finds themselves traveling to the city of Great Wexly, which is dangerous for Crispin, but necessary for Bear. But when Crispin finds out what the words on his cross mean, he realizes why John Aycliffe is hunting him down. But when Bear is kidnapped by Crispin’s old master, can Crispin rescue him?
Recommendation:
This book was not one of my favorites, but it was still okay. There wasn’t a lot of adventure or action, but the story was good. The characters fit well with the story, and there were some plot twists. If you see this book, and you are looking for something different from fantasy, this one is the one for you.
