Setting:
This book is a fantasy-adventure novel, with a quest. It takes place in ancient China, during the Han dynasty. This story follows the adventure of a young girl named Ping, and is told in third person.
Plot:
Ping, referred in the early parts as “the girl”, is a slave. Her one friend is a rat who she named Hua, meaning blossom. Ping carries out her day-to-day chores, such as feeding the animals. But the task that is her least favorite is feeding the dragons. Her master, named Lan, is the Imperial Dragon Keeper, but claims he cannot do it anymore, so the task falls to Ping. When one of the dragons dies, Lan boils the dragon into a stew and forces Ping to help. One day, when she is sneaking around the Emperor’s palace, Ping overhears that a dragon hunter is coming for the remaining dragon. So, she takes off with the dragon, and embarks on the journey of a lifetime. The dragon’s name is Long Danzi, and Ping must help him reach the ocean, and protect his stone. Encountering healers and necromancers, dragon hunters and boy emperors, Ping must learn how to become a true Dragon Keeper, and survive her perilous journey.
Recommendation:
This book is funny, full of adventure, and bursting with a wide spectrum of characters. It was a good story, and took me back to ancient China. My favorite character is Long Danzi because he is a great teacher, is a dragon, and is so monotonous. It is a multiple book series, and I plan to keep on reading them.
