Setting:
This book takes place in Washington D.C, and is set in modern times. The main character is Florian Bates, a twelve year old boy who works for the FBI. The genre of this book is mystery, and it is told in third person.
Plot:
Florian Bates is the creator of TOAST. What is TOAST, you might ask? TOAST stands for the Theory of All Small Things. TOAST can be used to figure out things, such as where people are from, or how many kids they have. Florian has lived in many different places in Europe, but at the start of the book he moves to Washington. Here, he meets Margaret, a twelve year old girl who lives next door to Florian. When Florian uses TOAST to figure out that Margaret is a part of a soccer club called DC Dynamo, she asks him to teach her how to use TOAST. Florian agrees, and takes Margaret to the National Gallery of Art. There, Florian uses TOAST to figure out that a man is from Europe. He tells Margaret that the key to using TOAST is to not focus on the big picture, but to focus on the small things. Florian and Margaret come back to the museum, and find the exact same man that Florian identified was from Europe. This time, he is posing an art student, who is copying a painting to get some experience. Florian finds this suspicious, but doesn't do anything. Later that day, his dad, who works as a security specialist, is called to the Gallery to investigate a crime involving the painting that Florian saw the man copying. The painting, and two others, have been stolen. Florian convinces his dad to take him along, and Florian solves the mystery using TOAST. After Florian cracks the case, the FBI contacts him. They ask Florian if he wants to work for them as a covert asset, meaning he would work for the FBI from time to time. Florian accepts, and the FBI asks him to try to figure out who stole the paintings. Florian thinks it is the man he saw copying the painting, and begins to investigate with Margaret. However, the case slowly begins to grow more dangerous, as the stealer may be apart of a Romanian Mafia ring. Will Florida crack the case in time? Or will the stealer get away with the crime?
Recommendation:
I have wanted to read this book for a long time, and finally got a copy. Now, it is one of my favorite books ever. The plot is very good, with a range of character personalities and a great mystery. There is nothing creepy or gory, and there is a lot of positive themes, such as friendship. Overall, you should definitely get this book.
