This book takes place in the city of Nagspeake, at an inn for smugglers called Greenglass House. the main character of this book is Milo Pine, a 12-year-old boy whose parents run Greenglass House. This is the first book in a 2 book series, but the author has written many other books set in the world of Greenglass House. Plot:
Milo Pine is looking forward to a quiet Christmas break at Greenglass House, one that is not filled with bustling guests. However, on the first day of the holidays, five guests show up, all with differing personalities. One of the guests gives Milo a book called "The Racontuers Commonplace Book". Inside, Milo finds a wallet and a map, which he keeps. The Pine's chef also shows up, Mrs. Caraway, along with her daughters Lizzie and Meddy. Milo becomes fast friends with Meddy, who introduces Milo to role-playing games. Milo and Meddie create characters for their own world, with Milo becoming the blackjack Negret and Meddy becoming the owl companion Sirin. Milo also shows Meddy the map, who thinks that it could lead to hidden treasure in Greenglass House left by the great smuggler Doc Holystone. The two go into the attic of Greenglass House where they find artifacts for their role-playing game. At night, Milo convinces the guests to tell stories, as a way to find out of the guests. One of the guests tells a story about Julian Roamer, a boy who receives wishes from magical creatures. Mrs. Pine also tells a story about Greenglass House, and how someone had seen ghosts on the property. The next day, Milo wakes up and heads downstairs only to see that three guests are complaining of something being stolen. Milo and Meddy go to look for the items, and find them in some of the unoccupied rooms. After Milo gives the guests their items back, another guest shows up, and more stories are told. After this, another object is stolen.Milo and Meddy find the object, they also find a mysterious paper saying there was a customs agent in the house. As more and more secrets are unveiled, will Milo be able to figure out the mystery of Greenglass House?
Recommendation:
This book is pretty good, and there are multiple things I liked about it. First, I liked the stories that were told by different guests. The stories all were different from each other, which I liked. Secondly, I liked how there were multiple mysteries. In the end, these all came together, which was pretty cool. Lastly, I liked the characters. Milo was a pretty good main character, and all the other side characters contributed to his character development. All in all, it was a good mystery book, that you should read.
