Setting:
This book takes place at Hogwarts, a magical school for wizards. This is the second book in the Harry Potter series, and continues the adventures of Harry Potter, a student at Hogwarts. This book is told in third person, and the genres are fantasy and mystery.
Plot:
Harry Potter is stuck at the Dursleys, his only relatives, They are not as bad to him as they have been in previous years, because they are scared. You see, Harry has just come back from his first year at Hogwarts, so he knows magic. By law of the Ministry of Magic, he is not allowed to do magic outside of school, but the Dursleys do not know that. (The Ministry of Magic keeps the wizard world safe from non-magical people.) Harry's wait for the school year to start should have been pleasant, but he is receiving no letters from his friends, Ron and Hermione. But on Harry's birthday, he finds out the reason for this. A house elf named Dobby has been taking all his letters. (House elves are servants for wizard families.) Dobby is trying to stop Harry from going back to Hogwarts, because there is a great danger at Hogwarts. Harry refuses to not go, so Dobby does magic. This leads to him getting a letter from the Ministry of Magic, which is how the Dursleys find out he can't do magic outside of school, which ultimately gets Harry locked in his room. But his friend Ron finally appears. Ron, and his two siblings Fred and George, rescue him from the Dursleys. Harry ends up spending the rest of the summer with Ron and his family. When the summer holidays end, Harry is back off to Hogwarts. But Hogwarts is not safe, just like Dobby said. Shortly after the great Halloween party that happens every year, Harry, Ron, and Hermione find a message, scrawled in red paint that reads "The Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Enemies of the Heir, beware.". The Chamber of Secrets is a secret room, hidden inside Hogwarts. It was created by Salazar Slytherin, one of the founders of Hogwarts. Inside, lurks a dangerous beast that only the heir of Slytherin can open. This beast has been going around the school, petrifying any one it can find. (Petrifying means that the person who gets petrified is frozen, and can not hear, speak, or move.) Can Harry and his friends figure out the mystery of the Chamber of Secrets before it is too late?
Recommendation:
This book was probably my least favorite Harry Potter, but it was still okay. There was not as much action as usual, but the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher was funny. The story built well on the previous book. So, to read and understand the other books, you should read this one.
