Setting:
This book is the 5th book in the Harry Potter series, and is the longest one in the whole series. It takes place in two main places #12 Grimmauld Place, and Hogwarts, a magical school for wizards. The main character is Harry Potter, who attends Hogwarts. The genres of this book are fantasy and mystery, and it is told in third person.
Plot:
Harry Potter is spending a normal, boring summer at the Dursleys. Harry usually enjoys receiving letters from his friends, Ron and Hermione, but this year they are very cryptic. When Harry goes for a stroll one night, he is attacked by dementors! (Dementors are evil, ghostlike creatures that guard the wizard prison of Azkaban.) Soon after this incident, Harry is retrieved by a group of wizards. These wizards take him to #12 Grimmauld Place, where Harry's friends have been hiding out. #12 Grimmauld Place is also the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix. The Order of the Phoenix is dedicated to fighting the evil Lord Voldemort, who is a very powerful dark wizard. Some members of the order include Sirius Black, Harry's godfather, Remus Lupin, Harry's old Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher from Book 3, and Professor Dumbledore, the Headmaster of Hogwarts. After a quick stay at #12 Grimmauld Place, Harry is off to Hogwarts. Harry's new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher has been appointed straight from the Ministry of Magic. (The Ministry of Magic keeps the wizard world safe from Muggles, or non-magic people) Her name is Dolores Umbridge, and she is very unpleasant. You see, in Defense Against the Dark Arts, the students are no longer allowed to practice the spells, but only allowed to read about them. Also, fifth years at Hogwarts take O.W.L.S. These are exams to test what they have learned in their five years at Hogwarts. Harry is overwhelmed by the amount of homework that he is being given everyday. When Harry falls asleep at night, he sees a door, at the end of a hallway, but he can never open it. Harry also can sense Voldemort's emotions, which could be very dangerous. Will Harry stay safe from Voldemort as he grows ever stronger.
Recommendation:
This book was darker than the last. There is a fight scene against Voldemort's followers, which is very suspenseful. Also a character gets attacked by an evil creature, and there is some blood. However, there were some funny scenes, and the story as a whole was good. I liked how there was a whole new order dedicated to fighting Voldemort, and how all of my favorite characters were in it. Anyway, you should read this book.
