Setting:
This book takes place at Hogwarts, a magical school for wizards and witches. The main character is Harry Potter, a 13-year-old boy who attends Hogwarts. This book takes place in the late 1990’s, and is told in third person. The genres are fantasy and mystery.
Plot:
Harry Potter is excited for his third year at Hogwarts, because it means he can get away from the Dursleys. Unlike most boys, Harry hates the summer holidays because he loves his school more than anything else. At Hogwarts, he can finally be a wizard, and do all his favorite things, like Quidditch, a sport like basketball but in the air. It is tough for Harry to stay with the Dursleys, and things only get worse when the Dursleys invite Aunt Petunia’s sister over. (Aunt Petunia is Harry’s mother’s sister.) Aunt Marge, who is not Harry’s aunt, but he has been forced to call her that anyway, makes the mistake of angering Harry. After thing go too far, Harry finds himself on the street. But the Ministry of Magic, who keep the wizard’s existence hidden from the Muggles, take him to Diagon Alley. (Muggles are people without magic.) Why they did not expel right on the spot, Harry does not know. He thinks it could have something to do with Sirius Black, a wizard criminal convicted of killing 13 people with a single curse. Recently Black has broken out of Azkaban, the most notorious wizard prison. But Harry is so happy to be away from the Dursleys that he does not give it much thought. After a couple of weeks staying at Diagon Alley, he is back to Hogwarts. Harry is glad to be back at school, with his new teachers and classes, and his same old friends. But the school is guarded by dementors, gray, spectral ghosts that guard the prison cells at Azkaban. They are guarding the school from Sirius Black, who in his cell muttered one thing in his sleep “He’s at Hogwarts, he’s at Hogwarts”. Everyone thinks that Black is after Harry, so he is fine with extra security. But when some starling information comes to light, Harry might end up searching for Black after all. But will Harry and his friends survive the encounter?
Recommendation:
This is my favorite of the three Harry Potter books I have read so far. It had a great story line, and I loved all the plot twists near the end. I loved the new characters because they made the story a whole lot better. This book is a little darker than the first two books, because there is some blood and violence. Besides that, it is a wonderfully crafted book that you should read.
