Setting:
This book takes place in England, and starts the 7-book, award-winning Harry Potter series. The main character is Harry Potter, an 11-year-old boy who does not fit in with normal people. This book is told in third person, takes place in the late 90’s, and the genres are fantasy and mystery.
Plot:
Harry Potter has no remaining relatives, except for the Dursley’s, his aunt and uncle. He hates his life here, and does not fit in with the other kids at his school. When Harry asks about how his parents died, he is given a quick “They died in a car crash. Don’t ask questions.”. He does not have any talents that he is aware of, but all will change soon. On his 13th birthday, Harry finds out that he is a wizard, and is invited to come to Hogwarts. Hogwarts is one of a few schools for wizards. Harry is astonished, but it is no joke. He must learn to deal with life as a wizard, which is very strange and very new to a boy like him. Some of these things are Quidditch, a game like basketball but in the air, his classes, which consist of things like Potions and Charms, and talking paintings. Luckily, he makes two friends, Ron Weasley, a red-haired boy with more siblings than you can count, and Hermione Granger, an extremely smart girl who is top of every class. But soon Harry learns of a mysterious package that is being hidden in the school. This package could contain something to resurrect the Dark Lord, Voldemort. It was Voldemort who killed Harry’s parents, but somehow could not kill him. After Voldemort’s attempt on Harry’s life, he disappeared. But Voldemort still has influence everywhere, even a school like Hogwarts. Can Harry and his friends find the package, navigate through all the traps guarding it, and beat Voldemort’s follower to it?
Recommendation:
This book is my second favorite so far of the three Harry Potter books I’ve read. First, I loved the characters. Harry seemed such a fit for this fantasy world, along with his loyal friends. Second, I loved the world. Hogwarts with its’ talking paintings, mail delivered by owl, flying broomsticks, and changing staircases was just so enjoyable. Third, after reading this book so many times, whenever I want a good story, I read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The story is great, and makes me feel connected to Harry. You should definitely read this book if the opportunity comes up.
