Setting:
This book takes place on a boat in the middle of the Southern Ocean, near Antarctica. The main characters of this book are Fin and Petrel. Fin is a boy who finds himself on the ship, and Petrel is a girl who has been living on the ship for her entire life and has no parents. The genres of this book are mystery and science fiction. This book is told in third person, and is the first in the Icebreaker Trilogy.
Plot:
Petrel is an outcast. She does not belongone of the three tribes of the ship, which are Braid, Grease, and Duff. (People in Braid are the officers of the ship, and help the ship keep its course. People in Grease are engineers, and keep the ship running. People in Duff are the cooks for the entire ship. All three tribes hate each other.) Petrel scrounges for food and scurries and hides through the ship with her two rat friends, Mr. Smoke and Mrs. Slink. One day, a boy is discovered on an iceberg, and is taken aboard the ship. He says he has no name, and he is thrown in jail down in Grease. Petrel rescues him and calls him Fin. Fin says he doesn't remember his past, but that is far from true. Fin has been sent by the evil Brother Thrawn and the Devouts to destroy the "demon". (Devouts are people who hate machines, and think they are an evil thing.) However, the trouble for Fin has just begun. When the leader of Braid, First Officer Orca, is killed, the people blame it on Fin, and begin to hunt for him. Petrel and Fin are forced to take safety in Duff. As the search for Fin comes closer and closer to Duff, Fin begins to wonder if destroying the ship and whatever machines are on it is a good thing. But his possible change of heart might not have come in time, because the evil Brother Thrown comes ever closer and closer.
Recommendation:
The main thing I liked about this book was the setting. I loved how it took place in the middle of the ocean and the author created an entire world on land, and an entire world at sea. Nothing too scary, except for maybe the Maw or Brother Thrawn. The characters were good and all had varied personalities. Overall, it was a good book, and one I would reccomend.
