This book has a higher age rating, if you didn’t notice. The reason is the main character Will, is enslaved in a harsh, cold environment. His taskmasters feed him a plant, basically a very addictive drug, that all he thinks about is doing his job, so he can get some. Also, a bad guy leaves people out in the cold, so they die, and when it describes that, it is pretty creepy. Just wanted to let you know, if you plan on reading this book. (Plus, these things take up like half the book.) Anyway, this book was definitely not my favorite, because it was kind of slow. (The next book on the other hand, is really great.) There is a quest, just not involving Will. (More on that later) Not much action, and for a 3rd book in a series, was bad.

The last book in this series left off with Will, and King Duncan’s daughter, Cassandra, being captured by the Viking like people, the Skandians. Halt is very adamant about going off to find Will and Cassandra. After being denied by the king, and leading Ranger, Crowley, Halt purposely gets himself booted out of the kingdom to go look for Will. (He gets drunk, and mocks King Duncan. Just letting you know.) He is joined by knight prodigy and Will’s best friend, Horace. They travel to Gallica, where Horace makes a name for himself as the traveling Oakleaf Knight. But all this attention attracts a local warlord, which could delay their trip even further. Meanwhile, Will and Cassandra are force to brave rough seas, enslavement, and many other things. Will they survive in the Icebound land, or perish?
