Setting:
This book takes place in the medieval kingdom of Carthya. The main character is Sage, a tween orphan boy who has thieving skills. The genre of this book is adventure, and it is told in third person. It is the first book in a five book series, and is told in first person.
Plot:
Sage is thief. He steals food from markets to feed him and the other orphan boys at his orphanage. One day, Sage is caught stealing by a noble named Bevin Conner. Conner arranges for Sage to go with him. Sage is put in a cart with three other orphan boys, all who have no idea what is going on. Once the cart stops, Conner tells the boys his plan. He wants one of the boys to become the long-lost prince Jaron. The King, Queen, and Crown Prince are all dead, but no one but the nobles know. However, one of the boys tries to back out, and he is killed. The remaining boys, Sage, Roden, and Tobias, are taken to Conner's home at Farthenwood. At Farthenwood, Conner begins to instruct them on how to act like Prince Jaron. He teaches them manners, the history of Carthya, and reading. The boys also learn how to fight with a sword, as Jaron was an adapt sword-fighter. Soon, each boy begins grow more like Jaron, while showing adaptness at a specific thing. Roden is good at swordfighting, Tobias at history and reading, and Sage at escaping. Sage tries to escape many times, doing everything from climbing on the roof to riding a untamed horse away from Farthenwood. As a meeting of the nobles grows closer and closer, the race to become Jaron grows in suspense and danger. Which orphan boy will be given the chance of the lifetime, to impersonate a dead prince?
Recommendation:
I enjoyed this book because of the main character. Sage is funny and stubborn, but is truly the best fit for becoming Jaron, even though Conner doesn't see it until later. This book is told from Sage's point of view, so we get glimpses into his past and how he thinks. The plot may be slow to some people, but I enjoyed it. Overall, this book is one that you should read.
