Setting:
This book takes place in a world called Middle-Earth, a place where dragons, goblins, and wizards all exist. The main character of this book is Frodo Baggins, a hobbit. A hobbit is a tiny human, even smaller than a dwarf, with hairy feet and hard soles. The genres of this book are fantasy and adventure, and it is told in third person. I cannot figure out what time period this book takes place in.
Plot:
It has been 60 years since Bilbo Baggins found the Ring, and all has been well. (The Ring is a powerful golden ring that can turn the wearer invisible.) However, dark forces gather in Mordor, and Sauron, the original wielder of the Ring and an evil wizard, grows in strength. (Mordor is Sauron's home.) At Bilbo's 111st birthday party, he disappears. Only Gandalf the Grey, a wizard, knows where he is truly going. Bilbo leaves everything to Frodo Baggins, his nephew. Frodo discovers the Ring, and Gandalf explains how Bilbo got it. (For that story, go read the Hobbit.) Then Gandalf throws it in a fire. As soon as Gandalf does this, words, that are written in Ancient Elvish, begin to appear. It says "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.". This means that the Ring Frodo has, is the most powerful of the other 19 Rings that were made. (9 rings went to the Men, and they became Saurons's servants known as the Nazgûl, 3 went to the Elves, and seven went to the Dwarves.) Gandalf tells Frodo to go to Bree, and that he will meet him there. Also, there will be one of Gandalf's friends, Strider, a Ranger. (Rangers are mysterious people who are good with a sword. Strider is also a man.) Frodo sets off with his loyal friend, Sam Gamgee. On the way to Bree, Frodo gets 2 new companions, Merry and Pippin. (Sam, Merry, and Pippin are all hobbits.) However, they are being chased. mysterious Black Riders on black horses follow them. When they arrive at Bree, they meet Strider. The Black Riders follow them to Bree, so the hobbits and Strider set off. Along the way, the Black Riders catch up and Frodo is stabbed by one of their blades. The blade of the Black Riders slowly turn the stabbed person into a wraith, so Frodo's condition begins to worsen. The Company, a.k.a the hobbits and Strider, are met on the road by Glorfindel, an elf from Rivendell. He hurries the Company along, because he knows that Elrond can heal Frodo. When the Company arrives at Rivendell, a council is held. Representatives from each race tell of how Sauron is growing in power. Gandalf also tells the backstory of the Rings, and how the King of Gondor at time, named Isildur, smote the Ring off Sauron's hand, but did not destroy it. During this council, Strider reveals himself as Isildur's heir, Aragorn. Frodo steps up to take the Ring to Mordor, and throw it into the lava of Mount Doom. At the end of the council, a Fellowship is formed to protect Frodo as he travels. Its members are Legolas the elf, Gimili the dwarf, Boromir the son of the king of Gondor, Aragorn, the four hobbits, and Gandalf. (Gondor is a city of men, and Boromir is the supposed heir, but Aragorn is the true heir.) The Fellowship sets off for Mordor, but is turned around at the mountains of Caradhras due to heavy snow storms.
Next, Gandalf makes the decision to go through the ancient dwarf mines of Moria. A expedition of dwarves had gone there a couple years ago, and never returned. Once the Fellowship gets inside, they are chased by Orcs. But the Fellowship's troubles do not end there. A demonic fire creature named Balrog begins to chase them too, and Gandalf confronts it. Gandalf buys the Fellowship enough time to get away, but he and the Balrog ultimately fall into a chasm. The Fellowship continues on to the woods of Lothlórien, where they meet the beautiful elf lady Galadriel. She gives them canoes and food to aide them on their journey. When they land to rest, Frodo sneaks off alone to continue his journey without everyone. Sam notices, and goes off after him. Soon after, the rest of the Fellowship is ambushed by Orcs. Will the Fellowship survive the Orcs? Or will all be lost by the mighty hand of Sauron?
Recommendation:
This book is a great successor to the Hobbit, and continues the story well. This book had a bunch of little things that careered over from the Hobbit. For instance, Gimili is the son of one of the dwarves from the Hobbit. This book on its' own is also super good. The characters all bring different things to the table, from Aragorn's swordsmanship, to Sam's loyalty. The language of this book is a little hard to read, but it is super descriptive and full of lore. If you enjoyed the Hobbit, or are looking for an epic adventure, here is one for you.
Related Content:
This book also has a movie. It is about 3 hours long, and was pretty good. It did have some things that weren't in the book, like Arwen the elf rescuing the Company instead of Glorfindel. Overall, it was kind of creepy due to the orcs, and I rate it a 3 1/2.
