Setting:

This book takes place in a world called Middle-Earth, a place where dragons, goblins, and wizards all exist. The main character of this book is Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit. A hobbit is a tiny human, even smaller than a dwarf, with hairy feet and hard soles. The genres of this book are fantasy and adventure, and it is told in third person. I cannot figure out what time period this book takes place in.

Plot:

Bilbo Baggins wants nothing to do with an adventure. He is perfectly content with staying in the tiny village of Hobbiton. When a wizard named Gandalf shows up and invites him on an adventure, he refuses. The same day, a group of 13 dwarfs shows up for dinner, and he learns of the adventure he was invited on. The group of dwarfs is heading to reclaim their homeland, called the Lonely Mountain, from an evil dragon named Smaug. Smaug chased the dwarves away from the Lonely Mountain many years ago, and now they are heading back home. Bilbo does not want to go, but in the end, he agrees. Bilbo and the dwarves's journey starts off well, but then gets derailed by a couple of trolls. After Gandalf rescues the Company, a.k.a Bilbo and the dwarves, they set off for Rivendell. Rivendell is a village of elves, and the elves' lord is Elrond. Elrond helps the dwarves decipher a map which will reveal to them a secret entrance into the mountain. The Company's journey then takes them through the Misty Mountains, a mountain range that stands between them and the Lonely Mountain. They are captured by goblins, but Bilbo escapes. He travels deeper into cave that the dwarves are being held in, and meets a creature named Gollum. Bilbo escapes from Gollum after a heated tournament of riddles, but not before he takes something. He takes a magical ring, with the power to turn the wearer invisible. Eventually, the Company escapes, and continues onward with their journey. They soon find themselves at Mirkwood, an evil forest that is filled with dark creatures. The dwarves are captured by spiders, but wood elves free them from the spiders, and then take them to prison. Bilbo sneaks into the elves fortress, and rescues the dwarves. After this, they finally reach the Lonely Mountain. But will they kill the dragon, reclaim their homeland, and become heroes? Or will they perish at the might of the evil Smaug?

Recommendation:

This book is a classic. The world of the Hobbit, better known as Middle-Earth, is told in such vivid detail you almost feel as if you are there with Bilbo. The characters are very easy to relate to, from the timid Bilbo to the mysterious Gandalf. The book flows very well, and the story is easy to follow. It starts off a little slow, but gets faster paced later in the book. If you don't have to read this book for school, you should definitely read this one.

Related Content:

This book has been made into a three part movie, each about 3 hours long. They are pretty good. Some of the characters, like Gollum, are creepy. They also incorporated a ton of stuff from the Lord of the Rings, which is the sequel trilogy. I would have liked it better if there was no stuff from the Lord of the Rings, but it was still a good movie. I rate it a 4.
