Setting:
This book takes place in the futuristic city of Panem, which is in North America. The main character is Katniss Everdeen, a teenage girl who lives in the outer districts of Panem. The main genre of this book is adventure, and it is told in first person. It is the first book in the Hunger Games trilogy.
Plot:
Every year in the city of Panem, an event called the Hunger Games occurs. It is to remind the citizens of Panem of the failed revolution that happened long ago. Each year, two contestants per district are chosen to fight in the Hunger Games, for a total of 12 districts and 24 contestants. The Games are a fight to the death, where the last one alive wins. Katniss has no want to participate in the Hunger Games, nor does anyone else. However, when her younger sister Prim is chosen as the female tribute for District 12 , Katniss has no choice but to go in her place. After the choosing, Katniss is plunged into a whole new world of glitz and glamour at the Capitol of Panem. She and Peeta, who is her fellow contestant from District 12, are coached by Haymitch, the only other winner from the Hunger Games that is from District 12. Katniss hones her skill with a bow, which is already superb. However, the contestants are not Katniss's only worry. During an interview with the Capitol, Peeta tells the crowd that he has a crush on Katniss. Katniss is at first confused, but is convinced by Haymitch that it is a good thing. Now, with a good story behind the contestants, people will be more likely to give Haymitch money so he can help them in the arena. And before Katniss knows it, the Hunger Games arrive. When the games begin, Katniss immediately distances herself from the rest of the contestants. She wanders in the woods, doing her best to stay alive. Katniss eventually encounters a pack of contestants, including Peeta. She drops a mutated wasp's nest on them, but gets stung herself. Another contestant, a small girl named Rue, helps her recover. Eventually, Rue is killed in a fight with another contestant. Shortly after, the Game masters, or the people who come up with the Hunger Games, announce that two contestants from the same district can win together. With the number of contestants dwindling, will Katniss and Peeta find each other in time to win the Hunger Games?
Recommendation:
I had heard good things about this book, and I was not disappointed. It had a riveting plot, and I could not stop reading. This is also a romance novel, but it doesn't hinder the amazing story of the Hunger Games. I loved the characters, and the dystopian world it took place in. It had a lot of violence and some drinking, and there were some scenes of nudity that were not described in detail. Overall, this is a must read for teenagers.
