Setting:
This book takes place mainly at the Oppenheimer School, which is located at an unknown location in the U.S. Fortsythe Fitzgerald is the main character, and he is a normal 12-year-old boy. The genres of this book are mystery and fantasy, and it is told in third person. This is the first book in a five book series, and this book takes place around modern times.
Plot:
Fortsythe Fitzgerald, better known as Fort, lives with his dad. One day, him and his dad are visiting Washington D.C, when disaster strikes. First, earthquakes start to shake the ground. Next, cracks start to appear in the ground. And finally, a giant, clawed hand comes out of the ground, and takes Fort's dad down into the ground. Fort is devastated, and goes to live with his aunt for a couple of weeks. While there, a man named Dr. Oppenheimer comes, along with a girl. Dr. Oppenheimer is the head of the Oppenheimer school, and the girl is enrolled there. Dr. Opps, as Fort later calls him, shows Fort one of his memories. In the memory, Fort sees an archaeology dig, and what is being unearthed is astounding. What has been discovered is skeletons of dragons, with people on the dragons backs. These people are holding books, but not just any ordinary books. These are books of magic. Dr. Opps wants Fort to come to the Oppenheimer School, where he can learn how to do magic. The Oppenheimer School is home to 2 books of magic: Healing magic and Destruction magic. The girl, named Rachel, is a master of Destruction magic. But why Fort, you may be asking. Well, the day when these books of magic were found is called Discovery Day. Only people born after Discovery Day can learn to use the books of magic. Fort wants to learn destruction magic, so he can get back at the creature that stole his dad. However, once he arrives, he is tested on each type of magic. He has to read the first spell from each of the books of magic, and whatever one he performs at better, he will be taught that type of magic. Fort is disappointed to learn that he will be learning Healing magic. Fort must also learn the first 3 spells in the book, in 3 days. Fort receives a tutor, named Jia. She is a master of Healing magic, but seems to be up to something. Jia is not the only weird person Fort meets. Cyrus, his roommate, is from the U.K's version of the Oppenheimer School. Cyrus is a master of Time magic, so he can see the future. Fort is confused as how to react when Cyrus predicts the future, but he gets used to it. One thing that Fort does not get used to is his new dreams. These dreams are of an expelled girl, who seems to be connected to the attack on Washington D.C. As Fort learns more and more about this girl, can he figure out the mystery surrounding the Oppenheimer School? Or will the coming danger destroy them all?
Recommendation:
I've been wanting to read this series for a long time, and I finally got the first one. It was pretty good, but there were somethings that were a little gross. For instance, one of the healing magic spells is to repair organs. So they had to use cow organs. Gross, but that is only like one scene. Otherwise, I liked it for the most part. The characters were cool, like Cyrus, who you will meet if you read this book. The plot went along well, and the mystery element built as it went on. So, if you want a good mystery-fantasy book, here is one for you.
