Setting:
This book takes place mainly at the Oppenheimer School, which is located at an unknown location in the U.S. The main character of this book is Fort Fitzgerald, a 12-year-old boy who knows magic. The genre of this book is fantasy, and it is told in third person. This is the second book in the series, and this book takes place around modern times.
Plot:
Fort is fresh off the defeat of the Old Ones, but the war for Earth is not over yet. For those of you who have not read book 1 yet, the Old Ones are magical beings who are trying to invade Earth. They are also masters of a specific type of magic, such as Healing, or Destruction. Fort is having dreams about the attack on Washington D.C, where a giant hand came out of the ground, and took Fort's dad. However, instead of a hand coming out of the ground, an Old One comes out and gives Fort a bargain. He will return Fort's dad to him, but in return Fort must give him the Last Dragon. Fort does not know what to do about this, but he comes up with a plan. Fort and his friends, Jia, Rachel, and Cyrus, are going to find the other two books of magic that are hidden at the Oppenheimer School. These books of magic are Summoning, and Mind. (Summoning magic can open portals, was the type of magic that was used to let the Old Ones through to Earth. Mind magic can be used to read peoples' minds, and take control of people.) Sierra, the girl that Fort kept having dreams about, is a master of Mind magic. She keeps in touch with Fort through his mind. Sierra is off trying to find the remaining books of magic, with a kid named Damian. (Damian was the person who brought the Old Ones to Earth using Summoning magic, but his mind had been taken over.) Fort wants to learn how to use Summoning magic, so he can go find his dad. When Rachel starts to set the book of Summoning magic on fire to destroy it, Sierra makes Rachel think she already destroyed it. Fort steals the book of Summoning magic, and starts to learn the spells inside at night. However, Fort's new roommate, Gabriel, notices him sneaking out. Gabriel appears to be cool with Fort sneaking out, but Fort senses something is going on. Gabriel seems to be having the same dreams as Fort, but does not want to talk about it. When Fort opens a portal to the realm of the Old Ones, will he rescue his father? Or perish at the hands of the Old Ones?
Recommendation:
This book had some pretty good plot twists near the end, but there was not nearly as many as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I liked this book because it gave an interesting backstory to dragons, and I like dragons. There were not many new characters, and the old characters stayed the same. I recommend this book, because it was pretty good, but the rest of the series just keeps getting better and better.
