Setting:

This book takes place in a world called Middle-Earth, a place where dragons, goblins, and wizards all exist. The main characters of this book is Frodo Baggins, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimili, and Aragorn. Frodo, Sam, Merry are all hobbits. A hobbit is a tiny human, even smaller than a dwarf, with hairy feet and hard soles. Gimili is a dwarf, Legolas is an elf, Gandalf is a wizard, and Aragorn is a man. The genres of this book are fantasy and adventure, and it is told in third person. I cannot figure out what time period this book takes place in. This is the second part of the Lord of the Rings.

Plot:

The Fellowship of the Ring left off with Merry and Pippin being captured by the Orcs, Boromir being killed, and Frodo and Sam going off on their own to destroy the Ring. This book picks up with Legolas, Gimili, and Aragorn going after the Orcs to rescue Merry and Pippin. Merry and Pippin escape on their own, and go to Fangorn forest. There, they meet a Ent called Treebeard. (Ents are tree-people.) Treebeard and the other Ents decide to attack Saruman the White's tower, called Isengard, because he is destroying the forest. (Saruman is the lead wizard of the White Council, which is made up of all five wizards and some elves. He used to be good, but Sauron corrupted him.) Meanwhile, the Gray Company, or Legolas, Gimili and Aragorn, discover that Gandalf is alive. He is now Gandalf the White, and joins the Gray Company. Gandalf leads the group to Rohan, to talk to King Theóden. Theóden is being influenced by an evil advisor, called Wormtounge. He eventually comes to his senses, and sends Wormtounge away. Theóden gathers his troops, and heads to Isengard. When they arrive at Isengard, they find Merry, Pippin, and the Ents. Saruman unleashes his forces, but he loses. Gandalf talks to him, and takes the Orthanc, a magical crystal ball. Now Gandalf is the true White wizard. Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam continue their journey. They see something following them on the river banks, and eventually learn that it is Gollum. Frodo and Sam capture him, and ask him to lead them to Mordor. When they reach the interior of Mordor, Gollum leaves them. Frodo and Sam witness the armies of Mordor marching out to destroy their foes. Then, Frodo and Sam go into an elaborate tunnel system, where a giant spider lurks. Will Frodo live to bring the Ring to Mt. Doom? Or will Sauron conquer the world?

Recommendation:

This book was not as good as the first book. It was filled with a lot of walking and talking, where as the first book had a little more suspense. There is a good battle scene which is the attack on Isengard, and that was cool. The story itself was split into two parts, one half about the Gray Company, and the other about Frodo and Sam. So, if you like the Fellowship of the Ring, you should read this book.

This book does also have a movie, which is about 3 hours long. I have not seen it yet, so check back here to see if there is one later.
