Setting:
This book takes place all over the U.S.A, and is an adventure novel. It continues the adventures of the Vanderbeeker family, Laney, the youngest girl, Hyacinth, the second youngest girl, Oliver, the middle child and the only boy, Isa and Jessie, the oldest girls who are also twins, and Mama and Papa, the parents of this hectic family. Also, in this book there are three other important characters, Mr. Beiderman, the Vanderbeekers’ landlord, Orlando, the Vanderbeekers cousin, and Aunt Penny, the Vanderbeeker children’s aunt. This is the 6th book in the Vanderbeeker series, and takes place after the events of “The Vanderbeekers Make a Wish”. This book takes place around modern times, and is told in third person.
Plot:
The Vanderbeekers, Mr. Beiderman, and Orlando have set out on a road trip, which was left as a surprise from Papa’s father, also known as Pop-Pop. First, they must pick up Papa in Indiana, then visit the list of places that Pop-Pop left for him. Some of these places include the Grand Canyon and St . Louis. At the end of the journey, the Vanderbeekers will visit Aunt Penny, and drive all the way back. Things aren’t off to a great start when the car breaks down, and it looks like the Vanderbeekers may not be able to see Papa on his birthday. Also, things get worse when Laney finds out that Jessie and Orlando are applying for a college, in California! Watch as the Vanderbeekers navigate car trouble, mischievous raccoons, college applications, and so much more.
Recommendation:
This book is a good read for younger audiences, but I still enjoyed it. The characters are funny, and how they solve everyday problems is usually hilarious. It is a quick read, but that does not really matter. So, if you want a cute story, here is one for you.
